Whether you’re fresh out of college or considering a new opportunity elsewhere, chances are there’s a promising start-up near you—or if you prefer, thousands of miles away. Likewise, if you’re an entrepreneur looking to launch your own start-up, you’re no longer limited to Silicon Valley, the Silicon Prairie, or any of the other “Silicon” locales established a decade ago.

You can’t, however, just throw a dart at a US map and expect overnight success. The non-tech press tends to put forth the narrative that the entire country is in the middle of a constant start-up explosion—this isn’t necessarily true. Previous hotspots have cooled (though they’re no less vibrant), and new ones have popped up in unexpected areas (Denver, anyone?), but compiling a definitive list requires some number crunching.

What would America lose if we blocked refugees and family-sponsored and employment-based immigrants from coming to the United States? For starters, we would likely lose more than half of the billion-dollar startup companies in America.

A new study from the National Foundation for American Policy finds that 55%, or 50 of 91, of the country’s $1 billion startup companies had at least one immigrant founder. I conducted the research by interviewing and gathering information on the 91 U.S. startup companies valued at over $1 billion (as of October 1, 2018) that are not publicly traded on the stock market and are tracked by Dow Jones VentureSource and The Wall Street Journal.

What types of companies are we talking about? You know many of them. If you travel around town, you may have used Uber, cofounded by Canadian immigrant Garrett Camp. If someday you want to fly to Mars, then you could benefit from a rocket designed by SpaceX, founded by South African immigrant Elon Musk. If you need a loan or other financial service, then you might turn to Avant, cofounded by Al Goldstein, who immigrated to America as a refugee with his family. Goldstein is one of three founders of billion-dollar U.S. startup companies who came to the U.S. as a refugee.

We look at the tech companies and organizations that are heating things up in Arizona which is quickly becoming the tech capital of the Southwest.

Home of the Grand Canyon, Arizona is known for its extreme heat and desert climate. However, the temperature isn’t the only thing rising in the Copper State. The state’s tech community has been making large strides over the past couple of years, transforming Arizona into the perfect place for any app developer who doesn’t mind applying a liberal amount of sunblock.

For instance, between job growth forecast to double the average among cities in the U.S. and a 188% increase in tech jobs over the past year, Phoenix looks to become known just as much for its tech community as its multitude of resorts.

One major reason for Phoenix’s recent tech boom is the complete revamp of the city’s Warehouse District. Within two square miles of the area, 60 tech startups currently operate inside Galvanize’s technology campus. This is reflective of the city’s tech boom as, according to Mayor Greg Stanton, the number of tech companies operating in the downtown area has almost quadrupled over a five-year period.

Actually, when we launched our business we asked ourselves the same question. Simply stated, C Corporations are the best option for any entrepreneur seeking funding from angel investors or venture capitalists.

From an administrative perspective, when entrepreneurs need to raise multiple rounds of funding via angels and VCs, they will need to issue several classes of common and preferred stock–and that is best managed in a C Corporation. Moreover, if you have any intention of issuing employee stock options at some point, incorporating as a C Corporation is your best bet.

Another point to note is that most angels and VCs prefer–and sometimes can only–invest in C Corporations. This is due to a few reasons. For starters, the pass-through (income/expenses) features of, let’s say, an LLC, are not desirable to VCs because it creates unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) and can cause their foreign limited partners to file a U.S. tax return.

Your business structure affects how much you pay in taxes, your ability to raise money, the paperwork you need to file, and your personal liability.

You’ll need to choose a business structure before you register your business with the state. Most businesses will also need to get a tax ID number and file for the appropriate licenses and permits.

Choose carefully. While you may convert to a different business structure in the future, there may be restrictions based on your location. This could also result in tax consequences and unintended dissolution, among other complications.

Consulting with business counselors, attorneys, and accountants can prove helpful.

Are you interested in becoming a Digital Nomads Places, perhaps in Southeast Asia ? This piece is for you.

I’m writing this article at 10,968 meters above sea level, somewhere over Turkey. I’ve worked in some amazing places as a freelance writer during my time in Southeast Asia: from co-working spaces in Cambodia, to a foodie paradise in Malaysia and a beachside hammock in Thailand.

A couple of years ago this would’ve seemed like an unachievable dream to me. I studied chemistry at university, but decided to undergo a complete career change in order to pursue dreams of seeing the world. It wasn’t easy, but being a freelance travel writer has given me the freedom to do what I love full time.

Working freelance can be a lonely experience, even more so if you’re doing it from a strange country miles away from home. By working in a public space such as a café, hostel or co-working space I found I was able to stay on task and make friends at the same time. Here are some of my favourite spots I’ve worked from in Southeast Asia.

By Carolin Pilligrath

If you could choose to work from anywhere, where would you go? To a bustling city, a tranquil beach, a snow-capped mountain, a lush rainforest? Or maybe all of them? Welcome to the life of the digital nomad.

You may be surprised by the rapidly increasing amount of people calling their home their workplace. According to a survey published by Upwork, there were already 4.1 million people working as freelancers in Australia in 2015.

Some of these people sell everything they own and change their whole life to work entirely on the road, travelling 365 days a year. These people are what we call ‘digital nomads’ and they work from the best places around the country or overseas. Their place of work is location independent – they can work from a campervan, set up their laptops in a fantastic café or type emails from the beach.

Nomads are challenged not only by all the beautiful sights of the world they want to see first, but to balance productivity with play too.

In recent years, many shared workspaces have popped up all around the world, which help digital nomads get done what they set their minds to. These shared spaces are great to meet like-minded people to bounce around ideas, build a network or simply just share travel stories from the road with other digital nomads.

So are you ready to fall in love with life, work from your laptop with only need of a good Wifi connection while you see incredible places and travel wherever whenever you want to?

The six cities below are possibly some of the best suggestions for remote work, digital nomads and other people working from their laptop. Factors included are estimated cost of living, internet speed, existing coworking spaces and overall quality of life.

This is something we hear ALL the time when people ask us what our jobs are. I get this a lot more than Yeison since he grew up in Costa Rica and people are always surprised at how I managed to move to Costa Rica at 23 and work as a digital nomad the nearly 5 years I’ve been here.

Costa Rica is actually a fairly popular country in Latin America for digital nomads. Though it’s still not as cheap or efficient as many Asian cities like Chiang Mai in Thailand, if you love Central America and tropical weather, Costa Rica is a top choice for you.

Most digital nomads in Costa Rica stay for 6 months to 1 year and though living and working in paradise sounds so easy, there are many things you need to know before you settle down into the pura vida life.

Here is our guide to being a digital nomad in Costa Rica so you can decide for yourself if you want to experience digital nomad life in one of the happiest countries in the world.

By Nick Wharton

We have said it time and time again. Mexico is the best place to start a new life for North Americans. But perhaps you’re not looking to “start a new life”. Maybe you’re just looking for a change of scenery or a new lifestyle.

Mexico is a country that’s close to home, but it’s a place where you can literally enjoy twice the life at half the price. In this article I’m going to explain why Mexico is the best place to consider for aspiring nomadic North Americans and how you can turn your dreams of living on a tropical beach paradise into a reality.

Note: This article is aimed towards digital nomads and travellers looking to live in Mexico, but if you’re a retiree looking to retire down south, many of these points will be valid for you as well.

The Costs

Mexico is one of the most affordable countries we’ve ever travelled to and living there is much cheaper than travelling. We rented a 2 bedroom, 2 level apartment with a full kitchen and a nice patio in San Pancho for just $350 / month in peak season! And accommodation is just the beginning.

Mexico is of great value – there’s no denying that. By moving to Mexico, you will literally enjoy twice the life of luxury for half the price. It’s incredible. Every aspect of life in Mexico is a fraction of what it would cost at home in Canada or the United States.
